SMU Tops Temple For First Conference Win

PHILADELPHIA (SMU) – SMU snagged its first conference win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Temple on Thursday night.

The Mustangs (8-3-1, 1-2-0) and the Owls (3-8-3, 1-4-0) headed into the break scoreless, despite multiple attempts. SMU dominated most of the first half of play, tallying nine shots to Temple's two and holding a majority of the possession.

"It was frustrating that we had a number of goal-scoring chances and didn't capitalize on them," head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "That made the game harder for us. Our play was pretty good but our touches right around the goal weren't sharp enough."

SMU broke the tie in the 78th minute when Allie Thornton converted a penalty kick for her 10th goal and fifth game-winning goal of the season. The goal places Thornton third in the Mustang record book for career game-winning goals at 12.

Leading the offensive charge, Thornton had six shots followed by Celiana Torres with four and Courtney Sebazco with three. Three other Mustangs added two shots of their own and three had one to total 22 for the match.

"It was a hard game," Petrucelli said. "All of the league games on the road are difficult because everyone knows each other pretty well. We know it's going to be hard, but we have to do our best to get another win on Sunday."

The Mustangs travel to Hartford, Conn. next to take on Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. CT at Dillon Stadium.
