Mustangs Secure 3-0 Win Over USF

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – No. 3/4 SMU shut out USF, 3-0, on Friday night to remain undefeated and secure the program's first win in Tampa.

The Mustangs (10-0-2, 2-0-1) started the match strong with six different players combining for 11 shots in the first half of play compared to four shots for the Bulls (6-3-0, 1-1-0). The first of SMU's shots to find the back of the net came in the 29th minutes when Gabriel Costa buried a shot in the upper right-hand corner of the net assisted by Knut Ahlander.

Six minutes later, Ahlander got the chance for a goal of his own when Garrett McLaughlin passed the ball across the top of the box and Ahlander's shot made it past USF's goalie to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

USF had their best chances of the night in the second half, but were stopped by Grant Makela, who saved both of the shots that he faced.

Henry Smith-Hastie scored an insurance goal for the Mustangs in the 85th minute to secure the 3-0 win.

The Mustang defense held the Bulls to 11 shots on the night with only two on goal and shut out its seventh opponent of the 2019 campaign.

Up next, SMU returns home to take on Memphis and Stetson at Westcott Field on Friday, Oct. 18 and Tuesday, Oct. 22, both slated to start at 7 p.m. CT.
