Women's soccer blanks Cincinnati in first round of AAC tournament

CINCINNATI (SMU) – No. 5 SMU defeated No. 4 Cincinnati 1-0 on Sunday, scoring in the 51st minute to advance to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament.

"It was one of those games where whoever scored first was probably going to win," head coach Chris Petrucelli said. "Getting the goal early in the second half was big for us."

The Mustangs (12-6-1, 5-5-0) dominated the offensive third throughout the first half of the match against the Bearcats (7-9-3, 5-4-1). SMU led 7-1 in shots, but couldn't find the back of the net and both teams headed into the break scoreless.

An opportunity came for the Mustangs early in the second half when Celiana Torres took a free kick from just outside of the right side of the box in the 51st minute. Brooke Golik headed the ball in for the second goal of the defender's career to give SMU at 1-0 lead.

Tatum Sutherland earned her seventh solo shutout with two crucial saves, one in each half, and multiple blocked shots. Cincinnati's offense put pressure on the Mustangs in the last 15 minutes of the match, but SMU's backline was able to hold them off to secure the win.

"Tatum didn't have to make a lot of saves, but the ones that she made were big ones, especially as the game was coming to an end," Petrucelli said.

The Mustangs are headed to No. 1 Memphis to take on the Tigers in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The match will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7, with action slated to start at 7 p.m. CT on the American Digital Network.
