Former Mustangs Kevin Friedland and Byron Foss sign with MLS teams

Friedland Heads to Kansas City, Foss Signs with Colorado Rapids
March 26, 2003

DALLAS (SMU) -- Two former SMU soccer standouts have signed with Major League soccer teams. Defender Kevin Friedland was selected by the Kansas City Wizards as the 53rd pick in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft and made the final roster cut while goalkeeper Byron Foss was signed by the Colorado Rapids to a developmental contract with the club.

Friedland closed out his collegiate career this past December and was a 2002 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America second team selection. Starting in every game in 2002, he was also named to the 2002 All-MVC first team and was second on the Mustang squad in assists last season with six.

Foss, 23, was 21-1 in his senior season at SMU, leading the Mustangs to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2001. That same year, he was recognized as a NSCAA/adidas All-America first-team selection. Former German National Team star Jurgen Klinsman, a consultant for the Anschutz Enterntainment Group in Los Angeles, recommended the young goalkeeper to the Rapids coaching staff during the off-season.

Congratulations to Byron and Kevin! Well deserved for both, who were sensational players for the Ponies.

Who wrote that story, calling them "Former" Mustangs? For shame. They are Mustangs for life.

Congratulations to Kevin and Byron. We now have these two, Daniel Hernandez, Tom Presthus, Luchi Gonzalez, Carl Bussey, Paul Broome - 7 Ponies in MLS is awesome, and that number will only get bigger (did I forget anyone?)

Don't forget Diego Walsh with the Columbus Crew. Also, Luchi Gonzalez signed with the Second Division Swedish club Bodens BK on March 27, so the SMU count in the MLS remains at seven...
