Mustangs Crowned AAC Champions After Beating UCF 1-0

ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) -- The No. 10 SMU men's soccer team was crowned champions of the American Athletic Conference on Saturday night after dispatching 1-seeded UCF on their home field, 1-0. With the victory the Mustangs have earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Mustangs (16-1-1) have now won three consecutive AAC championships, beating the Knights (14-2-2) in each match. It is the program's 21st conference championship, and they become the first AAC team to win three straight titles.

The match was highly anticipated pitting the No. 10 Mustangs and the No. 5 Knights in a rematch. Earlier in the season the two top AAC sides played to a 3-3 draw in Dallas. But tonight, the Mustangs would be able to hold a powerful Knights' offense in check, as SMU goalkeeper Grant Makela corralled four saves on Saturday night, shutting UCF out for the first time since its loss to Lipscomb in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

The first 15 minutes of the match were virtually even, with both teams getting a few early chances. But as the teams settled in, the shots started flying as the next five minutes saw five shots between the two teams. The moment that decided the match came in the 24th minute when Lane Warrington played a cross across the face of the goal and the UCF defenders followed Garrett McLaughlin past the ball, leaving AAC defensive player of the year, Eddie Munjoma, wide open in front of net. He found the ball and put it in the back of the net, notching the third, and most important, game-winner of his season.

The second half would feature a UCF onslaught of shots against the Mustangs' backline. The Knights would outshoot SMU 19-9, but only four of UCF's 19 chances went on frame, as the Mustangs blocked multiple shots before they could find Makela in net.

But as time ticked away in the final minutes of the match, it set in that the Mustangs would be crowned champions. As the clock hit zero the team rushed to midfield to celebrate, for the third time in as many years.

The Mustangs, who likely will be a national seed in the NCAA tournament, find out who they play on Monday, Nov. 18 at 12 p.m. CT when the selection commitee releases its bracket.

This is the best SMU team in years. In a lot of years.
There are a lot of good teams out there, but I'm optimistic about this year's NCAAs.

We are the #8 seed in the tournament. For some reason they put us in the same bracket as UCF which received the #9 seed.

NCAA men typically seed by straight RPI.

Nice to get two home games!

Wow. The NCAA released the RPI and we did get screwed.

We are 3 and UCF is 5. So how is the 3 team in the country who just beat 5 only the 8 seed in the tournament?

Ridiculous. We should be the top seed in our quadrant at the very least.

As usual the NCAA does us no favors. They seed 3 ACC teams in top 4. They seed 3 Pac-12 teams ahead of us. So those conferences get no elimination games against each other until 4th round.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Really got hosed. Not only are SMU and UCF the 8/9 seeds but they have us set up to knock the AAC out of the tourney early

From SMUMustangs.com:

Mustangs Named No. 8 Overall Seed In NCAA Tournament

DALLAS (SMU) -- The AAC champion SMU men's soccer team heard its named called on Selection Monday when the NCAA selection committee announced the Mustangs as the No. 8 overall seed in the 2019 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. With the Top 8 seed, the Mustangs earn a first-round bye and have hosting rights through the Sweet 16 if they win in the round of 32.

It's the Mustangs (16-1-1) 33rd appearance in the tournament, and fourth since Kevin Hudson took over the program in 2015. SMU's selection as the No. 8 seed marks the seventh Top 8 seed since 2000 for the program, who made runs to the College Cup in 2000 and 2005.

The Mustangs earned the AAC's automatic qualifying bid on Saturday night when they defeated UCF to win their third-straight conference championship, meaning that Monday's selection show wasn't a question of "if," but rather a question of "who."

That answer came at noon on Monday when the bracket revealed that the Mustangs will play host to the winner of Thursday's opening-round match between NC State (9-6-3) from the ACC and Sun Belt champions Coastal Carolina (9-7-3).

SMU leads the country in goal differential (+45) and ranks second in scoring offense, netting 58 goals this season. The team has virtually re-written the AAC record book, setting conference records in points, goals, assists, in addition to host of individual records. Eddie Munjoma and Gabriel Costa both were selected as AAC Players of the Year at their respective positions, and three others earned All-Conference selections.

SMU's match versus either of those teams will be on Sunday, November 24 at 7 p.m., played at Westcott Field.

The Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship will be Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and the quarterfinals Dec. 6-7. The final four teams will head to the 2019 College Cup, to be held Dec. 13 and 15 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. ESPNU will provide live coverage of the semifinals and national championship game.
