SMU men's soccer head coach Kevin Hudson, goalkeeper Grant Makela and forward Garrett McLaughlin visited with PonyFans.com after McLaughlin's goal in double overtime and Makela's shutout lifted the Mustangs to a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Championship.

Mustangs Beat Coastal Carolina 1-0, Advance To Sweet 16

DALLAS (SMU) -- Garrett McLaughlin scored his seventh game-winner of the season in the 108th minute to push the No. 8 national seed SMU past Coastal Carolina and into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Soccer Championship at Westcott Field on Sunday night.

The Mustangs now enter the Round of 16 for the third time since Kevin Hudson took the helm of the SMU program in 2015.

SMU would outshoot CCU 26-14 on the night, but just 6-5 on goal, with both keepers collecting five saves.

Both sides created numerous good chances in the first half, as the Sun Belt champion Chanticleers took eight shots in the first 45, one more than the Mustangs. SMU wouldn't break though as goalkeeper Grant Makela kept Coastal off the scoresheet, collecting three saves in the first half.

SMU's best chance in the first half came in the 28th minute when Gabriel Costa made a defender miss and played it into the box, but the ball was cleared out before a Mustang could put it on net.

Things would start to open up for the Mustangs, as they tallied 12 shots in the second half, seven more than CCU. In the 78th minute Knut Ahlander broke free from the Coastal back line and fired a rocket on frame, but the shot struck the woodwork and bounced out of the box.

With time winding down, the Mustangs pressed forward for a game-winner in regulation, but CCU goalie Alberto Ciroi came up with save after save to keep SMU off the board, pushing the game to OT.

With 90 minutes in the books and nothing on the scoreboard, SMU would head to overtime for the third time in four games.

The first overtime period was dominated by the Mustangs as they took four shots to CCU's zero, but SMU couldn't find a winner so the two sides entered a final golden-goal period.

In the 108th minute the moment would finally arrive for the Mustangs.

Knut Ahlander found his way through the Coastal Carolina defense and put a shot right at the goalkeeper, who then deflected the ball directly onto Garrett McLaughlin's foot. With the season on the line, the Mustangs' leading scorer put the game away as McLaughlin scored his 16th goal of the season to send SMU into the Sweet 16.

SMU GK Grant Makela earned his seventh shutout of the season and improved to 11-1-1 in 2019. He hasn't allowed a non-PK goal since the regular season, and his five saves tonight bring his season total to 55.

The Mustangs now look ahead to an AAC-title rematch with No. 9 seed UCF next weekend. SMU and the Knights have faced off three times this season, drawing the first match in the regular season and then with the Mustangs beating UCF just over a week ago, 1-0, to win the AAC crown.

"We know them and they know us." Hudson said of UCF after the match. "It's a really good game and they're an excellent team. It's a fun game to coach and to watch these guys play. I don't think there needs to be any extra motivation in it...I think it's the two best teams in our league."
