SMU names Stewart Brown as women's soccer assistant coach
Brown comes to SMU from Limestone College
May 13, 2003

DALLAS (SMU) -- Stewart Brown, head coach of Limestone College's men's and women's soccer teams, has been named SMU assistant women's soccer coach, as announced by new Mustang head coach John Cossaboon. Brown began his duties at SMU on Monday.

"Stewart brings an excellent combination of playing experience and the proven ability to build a program at the collegiate level," states Cossaboon. "His dedication and work ethic compliments the direction in which the SMU women's soccer program is taking."

Brown has spent the last seven years at Limestone College (Gaffney, S.C.) where he has served as the Director of Soccer (since 2000), head men's soccer coach (since 2000) and head women's soccer coach (since 1997). In 2001, Brown swept Coach of the Year Honors (men and women) in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference. It was the first time in the history of the CVAC that a coach had garnered both honors in the same year.

He also served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching such courses as exercise physiology, strength training and conditioning. Brown has also served as a coach with the South Carolina girls' ODP since 2000 and directed the Coastal Carolina Soccer Academy the last two years.

Brown earned a Master's degree from Furman University in Health and Exercise Science in 2000 and his Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine from Alderson-Broaddus College (Philippi, W.V.) in 1996. A goalkeeper for the Alderson-Broaddus College men's soccer team, Brown was a starter for the nationally-ranked program until suffering a career-ending injury in 1993.

Born March 2, 1974, Brown is a native of Paisley, Scotland, and is married to Berkeley Brown.

Sounds like a good addition to the staff, because his background as a 'keeper will be vital to the development of SMU netminders.

GK Erin McLeod supposedly is leaving school for a year to play with the Canadian National Team. Maybe this will help convince her to return in 2004.

I'd bet the team's success this year will have a larger effect on whether Erin McLeod and Sasha Andrews return in 2004 than the arrival of the new assistant coach.

FYI.....Erin McLeod is without a doubt coming back to SMU after she is done playing with Canada in the World Cup. Now whether or not Sasha comes back to SMU is still up in the air.
