From Sunday's DMN:

SMU men finish second at WAC meet

SMU's Hannes Hopley added the discus title Saturday to the shot put championship he won the day before, and Mindi Pukstas won the 5,000 meters, helping the men's team finish second to UT-El Paso at the Western Athletic Conference championships in El Paso.

The Miners received a huge lift from their sprint corps, finishing 1-2-3 in both the 100 and 200 meters. They won the title with 198 points to SMU's 146. Rice was seventh with 68.

The Owls, however, ran away with the women's team title. Despite entering Saturday more than 40 points out of first place, Rice finished with 172.83 points to Nevada's 147 1/3 . SMU was sixth with 80.

Hopley easily defeated teammate Michael Robertson in the discus, and the Mustangs also picked up points with Matt McKinney finishing eighth. SMU scored three times in two other events: the 1,500 and 5,000 meters. Martin Allgeyer was second in both.

For the women, Zivile Pukstienne won the triple jump, while Karin van Rooyen and Eva Charfreitag were second in the 5,000 meters and hammer.
