PARADE SOCCER ALL_AMERICANS!

Postby Ponymon » Sun May 25, 2003 11:32 am

Two recruits of Schellas made the team this year, Ramon Nunez and Chase Wileman. Ramon was named the "Top Midfielder". "As a member of the Dallas Texans soccer club team, Ramon Nunez dominated at midfield. "Ramon is the best young attacking midfielder in the country," says Coach Schellas Hyndman of Southern Methodist University. "He has great ball skills, vision, and can make things happen." Ramon, who trains with a Major League Soccer team, the Dallas Burn, will finish high school a year early and atten SMU in the fall.

Now Schellas needs to recruit Freddy Adu of Potomac, Md. who is also graduating a year early next year. This kid is supposed to be the next Pele (LeBron James) of soccer!

Adu will never see a college field. He just signed a $1 Million shoe deal with Nike at age 13 according to the Washington Post and has no desire to play college soccer.

Adu has numerous offers from professional teams overseas (an Italian team tried to sign him two years ago), but according to an "Outside the Lines" show on ESPN last night, he might sign with MLS to play for D.C. United so he can be near his family. He's living and training in Bradenton, Florida, but his family still lives outside Washington, and there's some talk that he wants to be near home while his younger brother goes through the same training/development process that he has gone through. No way he's going to college, at SMU or anywhere else.

Nuñez also has professional options. It's likely he'll play at SMU, but that's not guaranteed. It will be great for the Ponies if he does, because he's been called as talented as Diego Walsh, in terms of how he sees the field and attacks offensively.

Nuñez and Wileman are strong recruits, but don't overlook Kenny Cooper of Dallas Jesuit. Many in the soccer community think he's the best HS forward in America. He's big (6'1" or 6'2") and very strong in the air, drawing comparisons to former SMU all-America Larry McPhail. The Ponies are in dire need of a powerful forward if they want to return to their position as a legitimate contender for a national championship, and Cooper could be that player.l
