Mustangs capture four WAC conference titles in 2002-03

DENVER -- The SMU Mustangs won the Western Athletic Conference's inaugural Commissioner’s Cup, as announced by the league on Wednesday. SMU tallied 96 points to take the title. Posting a second-place finish was Rice with 91 points, while Fresno State was third (86.5). The Commissioner’s Cup is given to the school that performed the best in each of the conference’s 18 men’s and women’s championships.

Points were awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams which participated in each sport. Regular season standings were used for football, baseball and softball, while ties in tournaments were broken by using regular season conference winning percentage, if applicable.

Rounding out the rest of the conference field was Nevada in fourth with 81 points, Tulsa grabbed fifth with 78, while UTEP was sixth with 73.5. Taking seventh was Hawai‘i at 68, Boise State finished eighth (59.5), Louisiana Tech was ninth (45.5), while San Jose State rounded out the field with 42 points.

SMU won the inaugural title, gathering 96 points for the 2002-03 school year, winning four conference championships. The Mustangs won men’s cross country, soccer, men’s indoor track and field and swimming and diving. The four titles alone were enough for 30 early points and a steady grasp on the lead which they never relinquished.

Rice’s 91 points were aided by conference title’s in the final two championships of the season, grabbing the women’s outdoor track and field and baseball titles and 16 points. The Rice women brought home the cross country title, giving them 10 points to start off the year.

Fresno State, who needed its softball and men’s track programs to boost them into third, tallied 86.5 points to finish third in the inaugural season. The Bulldogs were led by conference titles in women’s tennis and men’s golf, registering 20 points.
