Sean Kiracofe joins SMU staff after stint at UTEP

DALLAS (SMU) - Sean Kiracofe has been named assistant volleyball coach at SMU, head coach Lisa Seifert announced today.

Kiracofe comes to SMU after serving as an assistant at UTEP in 2002. A native of Austin, he joins the Mustang staff after serving one season at UTEP and a three-year stint as a club coach with the Austin Metro Volleyball Club.

"Sean was one of the first Texas players to reach the Fab 50 list, and that says a lot about him as a player," said Seifert. "He has also worked as a head coach in the club ranks, and I feel like he will be a definite asset to our program."

Kiracofe will assist with all phases of the program with primary focus on training the middle blockers, travel, recruiting and practice preparation.

While with the Austin Juniors, Kiracofe led his 14-1 team to a third-place showing at the Baltimore national qualifier. The squad then captured seventh at the Devern Crossroads and ninth at Lone Star. He was also involved with Jeff Nelson's Red Raider Volleyball Camp from 1997-99.

Kiracofe began playing competitive volleyball at the age of 13 with the Austin Juniors. He competed for five straight years at the Junior Olympics from 1990-94, and in 1994, Kiracofe became the first Texan named to Volleyball Monthly's Fab 50, a list honoring the top 50 players in the nation.

After high school, Kiracofe was a four-year starter for Texas Tech. He captained the team in both 1998 and 1999 from his middle blocker position. Kiracofe led the Red Raiders to a Top-25 club ranking both his junior and senior seasons.

Born July 3, 1976, Kiracofe graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1999.

The SMU volleyball season begins on Aug. 29, when the Ponies travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational.
