Francis Named The American Track Athlete Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Chelsea Francis was named American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week after her performance at the Leonard Hilton Invite in Houston.

Francis posted the 11th-best time in the NCAA this season in the 60m prelims with a time of 7.30, 0.05 seconds off her personal record. After qualifying for the finals, the senior won the event, crossing the line with a 7.31 time.

Francis was a part of the 4x400 team that also took first in Houston. The team ran a time of 3:44.72 to easily win the event and post the third best time in program history. With Francis running the third leg alongside Ashton Woods, Chika Iwuamadi and Annette Bolomboy, the Mustangs' time was the best time in the AAC (by 3.09 seconds) and ranks 35th nationally.

This is Francis' third time to win the AAC's Indoor Athlete of the Week honors in her four-year career. Francis won her first Indoor AAC gold in 2019 in the 60m and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time. Francis holds the conference record in the 60m.

Francis and the Mustangs return to the track on Friday, Jan. 31 for the University of Houston's G5/Mid Major Invitational.
