Smithson, Rhodenbaugh Lead Mustangs On Final Night Of AAC Championships

HOUSTON (SMU) – Peter Smithson was named the Diver and Freshman of the Year, while Caleb Rhodenbaugh earned his second conference title, as the Mustangs concluded the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships Saturday night.

Smithson won his second conference championship of the event, this time on platform. The 356.40 was over 37 points ahead of his closet competition. Parker Hardigree was third in the event at 309.60, posting his first NCAA Zone score of the season in the event. Saturday's trip to the podium made three straight for the pair at the Championships.

Dominic Hoefer was also in the event's Championship Final, scoring sixth place points with a personal-best 248.60, while Dominic Carollo picked up 14th place points.

For leading the Mustang efforts, Darian Schmidt was named the men's Diving Coach of the Year for the third straight season.

Caleb Rhodenbaugh had another career day, completing the sweep of breaststroke events. The junior led four Ponies in the Championship Final of the 200 distance with a 1:54.74, the same time he posted in prelims to become SMU's second fastest performer all time. Brayden Rudd also dropped his personal-best time to 1:56.53 to make the list at number five and place fourth. Colin Feehery finished sixth at 1:57.31 and is sixth all time, while Connor Dalbo (1:57.53) finished seventh and sits seventh with his prelims time of 1:57.36. All four Mustangs are under the NCAA B standard.

The Mustangs also received 14th points from Jackson Skigen (2:02.59) out of the Consolation Final.

SMU's final individual podium performance came from Daniel Forndal in the 100-yard freestyle. It took a 43.47 from the Mustangs' eighth fastest performer all-time to make the podium. He was one of three in the 100 free finals on the last night, as Charlie Kaye (11th) and Riley Hill (15th) both contributed to the team score.

The 200-yard backstroke saw three Mustangs, led by Matan Segal (1:45.92) at fourth place, score in the Championship Final. Duncan Brookover (1:46.04) finished fifth and Jack Easton (1:46.49) sixth, both posting career-best times.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Reid Anderson registered his first-career NCAA B cut at 1:45.96 to finish fourth. He also becomes SMU's seventh fastest performer. Wyatt Welch also out-touched his best time with a 1:51.03 for 10th place.

In the mile, Petar Bozhilov finished seventh at 15:32.96 and Wyatt Cronk was 11th, surpassing his season-best time at 16:02.74.

The Championships closed with Forndal, Kaye, Hill and Koo teaming up for bronze in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:55.34.

As a team, the Mustangs finished third in the standings with 763 points.

The Mustang divers next compete at the NCAA Zone D Championships at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center March 9-11, while swimmers await selection for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships held March 25-28 in Indianapolis.

I like the individual performances; noting personal bests, despite the third place for the team. This highlights the need for depth and better results in the relays.

Greg has the team's attention with the focus on developing the swimmers he inherited and recruited with more challenging workouts and intensity of his approach.

Congratulations and I suspect our Conference performance and NCAA Qualifying Times will increase with each successive year.
