Mustangs Earn Runner-Up Honors At AAC Championships

HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships. The four-day event concluded Saturday evening with six top-three finishes for the Mustangs, including a conference title from Olivia Grossklaus.

Grossklaus led a one-two finish for SMU in the 200-yard butterfly, as she posted a career-best 1:56.44 to come in under the NCAA B standard and become the second fastest perform all-time at SMU in the event. Grossklaus now shares that number two spot with her Mustang teammate, Erin Trahan, who finished second in the race. Trahan covered the distance in 1:57.06 for silver. SMU also picked up points from Valentina Becerra (2:02.39), who scored out of the Consolation Final.

Sam Smith (50.27) led three Mustangs in 100-yard freestyle finals, earning her first career all-conference honors with a third place finish in the event. Janelle Gursoy (51.08) was 13th overall with a career performance in finals, and Alex Stevens (51.18) was 15th.

A pair of Mustang divers also took their turn on the podium on night four with Johanna Holloway placing second and Nicole Stambo third on platform. It was the second podium appearance for both this week as each had previous runner-up performances at the Championships.

Stambo's 249.90 in Finals was a personal best, while Holloway registered a career mark of 282.55 in prelims. Both have achieved the NCAA Zone qualification score in the event.

Also scoring on platform was Taylor Ohlhauser, who was 13th out of prelims with a personal-best 175.90.

The 200-yard backstroke Championship Final saw Felicia Anderson post her third career NCAA B cut in the event with a 1:56.77, which was good for fourth place. The time also moved her up in SMU's all-time performer rankings to number eight.

Gabi Grobler joined in her in the A Final, finishing sixth, and Kiley Vandevier won the Consolation Final with her lifetime best mark of 1:58.81.

In the mile, Frederica Kizek dropped nearly 17 seconds for a career mark of 16:28.89 to finish fifth at her first championships. The time also moved her up SMU's rankings to make her the Mustangs' eighth fastest performer all time. Annabelle Corcoran also scored in the event, placing 13th in a personal best time of 16:59.30.

Three Mustangs competed in the B Final of the 200-yard breaststroke with Julia Yakushi (2:19.98) leading the way at 11th place. Olivia Hernandez (2:20.11) was 12th and Elise Johnson (2:22.11) finished 14th.

The Championships concluded with the relay group of Smith, Trahan, Anderson and Grobler earning silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best 3:19.55.

The Mustang divers next compete at the NCAA Zone D Championships at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center March 9-11, while swimmers await selection for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships held March 18-21 in Athens, Georgia.

Well done, Ladies!

Our butterfly and backstroke (my favorite) swimmers excelled with some strength, if not depth, in the freestyle.
