Smithson Turns In NCAA Qualifying Performance On Platform

DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Peter Smithson turned in his second NCAA qualifying performance of the week, this time on platform, to lead the Mustangs on the final day of the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Smithson, who automatically qualified on 3 meter Monday, finished eighth on platform today to earn an automatic bid to the Championships that will be held March 25-28 in Indianapolis. It was the first time that a Mustang earned automatic bids in multiple events since 2015, when Devin Burnett did so on 1 meter and platform. Burnett went on to qualify in all three events.

Smithson placed eighth in the event with a cumulative score of 659.05 over two rounds.

In addition to his NCAA Championships qualification, Smithson was named the American Athletic Conference Diver of the Year and Freshman Diver of the Year in his first season on the Hilltop. He also earned conference championships on 3 meter and platform, as well as all-conference honors on 1 meter, 3 meter and platform.

Joining Smithson in the platform final was Parker Hardigree. Hardigree finished 15th overall with a final score of 559.25.

Hardigree was a three-time all-conference selection in 2020 and earned his highest career finish at a Zone Championship this season, finishing 12th in the 1 meter final.
