Seems likely this isn't the last time we'll see a story like this:

Sorry to read that cause soccer is so popular up here with a new mls team. And it is one less time I get to see SMU play up here. Last seasons beatdown was great to see.

The dreams that anybody ever had of SMU having baseball again or having a scholarship lacrosse team died today.

I think that this is going to hit a lot of non p5 schools who don't have an endless supply of money.

It will hit in the P5 as well. Whether it is because of a change in behavior as people get used to "no sports" and find other things that interest them, or because we go in to a depression as an economy, or we lose more money to taxes to cover for the deficit and increase health care spending... spending habits are going to change for the long term and that is going to significantly impact professional and amateur sports participation and revenues.

and those schools who can't /won't commit to developing top level revenue generating programs will suffer greatly. First to mind is our bball program which is probably one of the worst in a mid-level conference. Poor coaching, poor recruiting (actually non-existant). and poor alumni support plus an AD who exhibits little interest in what the fans care about will continue the downfall of this program. I expect next year will show how few fans actually care about this program as we will see a virtually empty arena.

This is really sad news.

As much money as athletics loses, it is kind of surprising any school has more than the minimum of men's sports.

I wonder if The American will have to reach out for some affiliate members.

Those dreams were dead long before this decision.

Is it true that UC’s men’s soccer team hasn’t had a winning season in 20 years?
