Miller Named AAC Outdoor Track And Field Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

DALLAS (SMU/The American) – Hannah Miller was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, conference officials announced Wednesday.
Miller graduated with a degree in political science, and finished the 2019-20 academic year with a 3.71 GPA. The New Zealand native is a three-time all-conference honoree in outdoor track and field, and has earned multiple conference all-academic team selections in her career. She won the 5,000m at 2019 outdoor conference championships, but was unable to defend her title as the outdoor season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
With a gold medal in the 5,000m at the 2020 AAC indoor championships and a runner-up finish in the 3,000m, Miller finished her career with a conference-record 11 medals at the indoor championships. She won a total of three conference championships, and earned all-conference awards in each of her four seasons.
After sitting out of the 2019 cross country season to represent New Zealand at the World University Games, Miller started the indoor season with a record-breaking run. She finished the 5,000-meter race in 16:06.14, besting two-time national champion Katie Swords' 23-year old SMU record by nearly 10 seconds (16:15.86).
During the indoor season this year, she finished second in the mile at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational in Houston, and posted a runner-up finish in the 3,000m at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational. She finished sixth at Vanderbilt in the 5,000m, 12 seconds behind the first-place finisher in a race that saw each of the top four runners finish faster than the Vanderbilt program record in the event (16:14.30, set in 2014).
Miller also earned three all-conference awards in cross country and was the 2017 individual champion. She led her team to the overall league crown in 2016, and competed in three NCAA Championships.
The AAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the conference's Faculty Athletics Representatives from a pool of student-athletes nominated by each league member institution.
