WAC Tournament

Postby HorsePower » Sat Nov 08, 2003 12:27 am

Just got home from the WAC women's tournament, and if there was any doubt before about the conference MVP, there isn't any more. Hawaii's Natasha Kai was completely useless - Rice marked her out of the game from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. I don't think she had a shot, and she stood and watched when the ball wasn't passed directly to her feet. She's fast, but doesn't hustle at all. And to top it all off, she got in an argument where her TEAMMATE - Devitt, or something.

Then Kim Harvey came out and scored all 3 goals in SMU's romp over UTEP.

When you go to the game tomorrow, we should get people chanting "M-V-P!" when she's introduced and after both of her goals tomorrow.

That girl from Hawaii who got ejected for punching the Rice player had better be suspended at the start of next season. That was beyond bush-league. And Miss MVP was a non-factor. When Kim Harvey is double-teamed and triple teamed, she (A) can still beat multiple coverage, and (B) uses the attention to find open teammates. Kai did neither. She showed the difference between an athlete and a great player. She's an athlete. Kim is a great player.

I thought the entire Hawaii team was an embarrassment. And that's a real shame, because I understand their coach is a really good guy with a goodd reputation as a teacher and a leader. He looked embarrassed after the game, and he should have been -- his team didn't perform, and they disgraced themselves. That coach deserves better. He should make the girl who threw the punch swim home -- and then dismiss her from the team.

Hopefully the WUSA gets back on its feet and Kim can really show her stuff.

Congratulations certainly are in order for Coach Coss, Kim Harvey, the all-tournament honorees and the rest of the Mustangs in general.

Some observations:

- While Kim Harvey (and lately Olivia O'Rear) have gotten all the attention (and they deserve every bit of it), Erin MacCallum and Lauren Mussallem played better this weekend than they have all year. Hope they can keep it up in the NCAAs.

- Amanda Clarke is one tough GK. She had a very sore shoulder, but there was no way she was coming off. And she made some great saves.

- Adria Campbell came off the bench and gave the offense a real spark - no small accomplishment, considering she wasn't even supposed to play because of a badly sprained ankle.

- The defense (especially Alyssa Pembroke and Ashley Watson) got better every game this year. Without them, the loss of Suzanne Collins would have been a killer.

- Kim Harvey is an absolute stud. Period. She deserves to go a long way in to the NCAAs with this team.

yes, she did awesome. she said after the ankle that someone had kicked it again and that it was still bruised and swollen. sucks for her.
