Men's Golf's Goodwin Is First Round Co-Leader At Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — SMU junior Noah Goodwin is the co-leader at the Southwestern Invitational, shooting a 2-under 70 Monday. The Mustangs are one stroke off the individual lead, in second place at 5-over par as the 54-hole tournament continues on Golf Channel Tuesday.

Goodwin used five birdies to get around North Ranch Country Club, playing the second-nine with a 3-under 33. Goodwin had three birdies in a row to start the back nine, and posted all five of his birdies in an eight-hole stretch. Goodwin is tied with USC's Shane Ffrench and Arizona State's David Puig for the individual lead and is one of just five players under par.

"The guys hung in there today in very tough conditions," head coach Chris Parra said. "There were a lot of positives for our first competitive round in ten months. If we tighten up a couple of loose items, we should be right there come the final round."

Junior Mac Meissner signed for an even-par 72, a remarkable score on a day that saw the field battle windy conditions for an average score of 77.12. Meissner is tied for sixth in the tournament, helping the Mustangs post a 5-over 293, one stroke behind tournament leader Arizona State.

Nathan Petronzio shot a 2-over 74 in his collegiate debut, and sits in a tie for 15th. Petronzio birdied three holes on the back nine of the par 72 / 6,992-yard track.

Justin Thompson enters the second of three rounds tied for 28th after an opening-round 5-over 77. Ollie Osborne went 3-under on the four par 5s at North Ranch Country Club, helping SMU to a tournament-best 11-under on the long holes. Osborne is tied for 38th with a 6-over 78.

The Mustangs tee off at 11:10 a.m. CT on Tuesday for the second of three rounds. Television coverage starts at 3:30 p.m. on Golf Channel, and live scoring is available on Golfstat.
