Mustangs Win 15-4 Over SDSU In Season-Opener

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – No. 5 SMU got a 15-4 win and earned all four Most Outstanding Player honors in its season opener against South Dakota State at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Friday.

"We were thrilled to be able to compete today since we haven't been in the arena in almost a year," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We have a little work to do, but I believe this is a very talented young team."

The Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 ECAC) kicked off the day sweeping all 10 first half points against the Jackrabbits (0-2, 0-2 ECAC). In Flat, Olivia Woodson put SMU on the board first with a 78, followed by freshman Katy Merchant, who scored an 80 for the first point of her collegiate career. Devin Seek's 84 and Miranda Seade's 87 helped clinch the event win for SMU. Madigan Eppink was named the Flat MOP for her performance, which earned her a score of 87. This was her second career MOP in as many appearances.

Next up in Horsemanship, Nya Kearns was a standout in her first collegiate meet, scoring an event high of 77.5 and earning the MOP honor. The rest of the lineup featured starters from the 2019-20 season, which saw only one loss before the postseason was canceled. Megan Waldron earned a 76, Lily Anderson a 75, Mallory Vroegh scored a 76.5 and Aubrey Alderman finished the sweep with a 73.5.

The second half started with Fences, where SMU scored three points and tied one. Freshman Taylor Madden earned her first point for the Mustangs with an 86, defeating her opponent by 15 points. Woodson and Seek each added to SMU's total with scores of 78 and 86, respectively. Seek's event-high score earned her the MOP for Fences. Transfer Alex Pielet scored an 80 to tie with her SDSU opponent.

SMU finished the day earning two points in Reining. Dani Latimer was named the MOP after scoring a 71.5, the event's highest of the day. Chalyce Head won the other point for the Mustangs in her first collegiate appearance with a 69.5.

The Mustangs will continue this weekend's action against UT Martin on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Dallas Equestrian Center. Action will start with the completion of the second half of the neutral site meet of SDSU versus UT Martin. The estimated start time for SMU versus UT Martin is noon CT.
