No. 5 SMU Defeats UT Martin In 15-5 Final

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – No. 5 SMU won its second meet of the weekend, defeating UT Martin 15-5 at the Dallas Equestrian Center on Saturday. The Mustangs picked up all four Most Outstanding Player awards in the win.

"Overall, I think we rode better today than yesterday," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We still have a lot to come back and work on before our short turnaround at TCU on Wednesday then with Auburn coming in two weeks, but I'm proud of how this weekend went."

The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0 ECAC) won two of the five possible points during Fences to kick off the meet versus the Skyhawks (0-3, 0-3 ECAC). Devin Seek put SMU on the board, scoring an 86 to defeat her UT Martin opponent. Olivia Woodson scored SMU's other point with a career-high performance of 88 and was named the event's MOP.

Over in Horsemanship, SMU won four points to take a 6-4 lead heading into the halfway point. Megan Waldron scored the event's highest mark and earned the MOP honor with a career-high of 78. The three other Mustang points came from Mallory Vroegh, who scored a 75, Aubrey Alderman with a 72.5 and Nya Kearns with a 75.5. All four athletes finished 2-0 on the weekend in Horsemanship.

SMU started the second half on Flat, earning the second sweep of the weekend. Alex Pielet and Madigan Eppink led the way in the event, both scoring a 97 and Pielet being named the Flat MOP. Woodson got the third point for SMU with an 83 followed by Taylor Madden, who scored a 91. Miranda Seade clinched the win for the Mustangs with a 95 in the fifth matchup.

The Reining team got a 4-1 win behind Dani Latimer, who scored a 72.5 and got her second MOP of the weekend. Freshman Chalyce Head earned her second point for the Mustangs with a 71.5 and was joined by Jill Pfisthner and Taylor Zimmerman, who earned scores of 70.5 and 69.5, respectively.

Ten riders went undefeated against both South Dakota State and UT Martin, including Woodson, who went 4-0 competing in Flat and Fences with one MOP. Out of the five Mustang newcomers that debuted this weekend, all earned at least one point for SMU. Pielet and Kearns were both named MOPs as well.

SMU is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 3 as the team faces metroplex rival TCU at Diamond Creek Ranch in Burleson, Texas. The meet is slated to start at 10 a.m. CT and no fans will be allowed at the facility.
