Volleyball swept by Houston in conference opener

Mustangs Fall to Houston In Conference Opener

DALLAS - The Mustangs' fell to the University of Houston 3-0 on the opening night of conference play. Jadyn Bauss secured her fifth-straight double-digit mark in kills on the season with 14 to lead SMU. Zairyn Hemsley matched her career-high with 28 assists in the match.

SMU battled throughout the whole game and fought back in the third set after being down 5-1 early. The Mustangs fell behind by five points once again, but then shortened the Cougars lead to one point (21-20). Houston eventually took the set, but SMU did not make it easy. Bria' Merchant and Makayla Miller stepped up on the defensive side of the court, each notching 12 kills on the evening. The Cougars hit .349 in the game and were led by Abbie Jackson who finished with 14 kills and 17 digs.

The Mustangs' were without two starters due to Covid-19 protocol.

SMU will continue its Pink Weekend partnership with the American Cancer Society tomorrow. Participants can bid on SMU game-worn jerseys and also give to a good cause. The starting bid price is $100 and the auction will run through Sunday. All proceeds will be gifted to the American Cancer Society - South Region - Dallas.

SMU will look to bounce back tomorrow as the Mustangs' rematch with Houston at 5 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
