SMU Earns Largest Shutout Win Since 2014 In 7-0 Final At USF

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – Five different Mustangs scored on Saturday as SMU earned its second shutout win of the season in a 7-0 final versus USF at Corbett Stadium.

The Mustangs (2-0-0) dominated against the Bulls (0-2-0), outshooting them 17-3, with nine of SMU's shots being on goal and one of USF's.

"We played well tonight," head coach Kevin Hudson said. "The game changed early in the first half when USF had a player sent off for a second yellow. We scored some excellent goals and managed the game well. The men will enjoy the win tonight, but we will remain humble and get back to work next week. It's very early in the season and we need to continue to improve."

Papa Ndoye earned his first points as a Mustang with two goals on the night, starting with the game-winner in the seventh minute off a pass from Gabriel Costa. In the 11th minute of the match, USF's Sergio Pineros-Mayorga was issued his second yellow card, leaving the Bulls a man down for the remainder of the night.

Lane Warrington netted his first of the season in the 14th minute and shortly after, Ndoye scored his second goal in 24th for the third SMU goal of the match. Tobin Shanks added to the lead with a header off a corner kick from Henry Smith-Hastie in the 45th minute to send the Mustangs into the half ahead, 4-0.

SMU came out of the break to add three more in the second half. Nick Taylor scored his first Mustang goal in the 58th minute and added a second in the 90th for four points of his own on the night.

Between Taylor's goals, Skage Simonsen found the back of the net in the 68th minute off an assist from Costa, his second of the match.

Shane Lanson earned his second win of the season, saving the only shot he faced over 72 minutes. Cole Johnson subbed in to spend the final 18 minutes in net.

The win is the largest shutout win for the Mustangs since defeating Central Arkansas 7-0 on October 15, 2014 in Dallas. SMU's seven goals ties it's own American Athletic Conference record for the most in a conference game.

Next up, the Mustangs face Tulsa at home on Saturday, February 20 at 7 p.m. CT. The match at Westcott Field will not be open to the general public and will be shown on ESPN+.

Even with the other team, 7 is incredible.
Great job!

We had a 1 man advantage for most of the game because a USF player was ejected after receiving 2 yellow cards. Either way, the team looked really strong. Great passing and defense.
