Men's Golf Fifth After First Round Of The Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. – The No. 17 SMU men's golf team shot a 1-over 285 to rank fifth in the 24-team field at The Prestige after one round. Nathan Petronzio had the Mustangs' low round of the day, with a 2-under 69.

The Mustangs found their groove on the back nine of the par 71 / 7,100-yard Norman Course at PGA West, going a combined -6 under from their four counting scores. After starting the day 8-over through six holes—and as low as 20th on the leaderboard—the Mustangs sank 13 birdies in their final 12 holes, rocketing up the leaderboard to fifth place. No. 3 Arizona State leads the event at -8, but SMU is just four shots behind No. 5 Pepperdine for second place.

Freshman Nathan Petronzio signed for a 2-under 69, his first collegiate round in the 60s in four tries. Petronzio, who shot a bogey-free -4 coming in, is tied for seventh, five shots behind tournament leader David Puig of Arizona State.

Noah Goodwin is tied for 25th after an opening round 71. Goodwin, who has now shot par-or-better in three of his four stroke-play rounds this season, was also bogey-free coming in, one of three Mustangs to accomplish that feat.

Mac Meissner had a steady 72 Monday to join the tie for 42nd at +1. Meissner was the only Mustang with a better first nine than second nine, shooting a bogey-free 1-under to start the day.

A stroke behind Meissner is Ollie Osborne at 73, tied for 53rd. Osborne mirrored the trend of the day, shooting 4-over before the turn and a blemish-free 2-under after. Dawson Ovard had three birdies to shoot 74 and enter the tie for 69th at +3.

In the concurrent Prestige Individual Tournament, Ben Wong shot a 2-over 74 at Coral Mountain Golf Club to tie for 31st.

SMU tees off in the second of three rounds Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. CT off of No. 10. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.
