Mustangs Win Five-Set Thriller At Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. - SMU won a five-set thriller (24-26, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 16-14) at Wichita State on Saturday afternoon. SMU overcame a 2-0 deficit and handed the Shockers (8-1, 3-1 AAC) their first loss on the season.

It was a record setting day for many Mustangs. Hannah Jacobs had a career-day with a personal-best 55 attacks and six digs. She matched a career-high with three blocks on the day. Jacobs also had three blocks at Wichita State on November 8, 2019. Jacobs finished with 19 kills to lead all players. Alex Glover matched a career-high with seven digs. Rachel Woulfe had a career-high six digs along with 11 kills. Jadyn Bauss combined for 12 kills and 19 digs for her seventh double-double on the season. Makayla Miller notched a career-best 29 digs. Kaylyn Winkler matched her career-high with seven total blocks today. Lily Heim was back in rhythm as she dished out 48 assists.

After falling behind 2-0 in the match and down 20-18 in the third, SMU went on an incredible 7-0 run to win the set and extend the match. Bauss, Heim, and Glover all had key kills in that stretch. SMU took this momentum and stormed out to a 7-1 advantage in the fourth set. The Mustangs' pushed their lead to 21-11, but the Shockers found an 8-1 scoring run themselves to cut the lead down to just three points. Winkler helped SMU take the next three points with a block assist and a kill in the series to set up a pivotal fifth set.

The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle as neither team was able to gain control. WSU went up 9-8, but SMU rallied to retake the lead after two bad sets by the Shockers and a big kill by Woulfe. SMU took the 11-9 advantage which led to a WSU timeout. The Shockers tied the set up later at 12. Two more ties down the stretch set up a tense ending. Jacobs finished off the Shockers with consecutive kills to complete the comeback.
