Mustangs Suffer First Loss Of Season At Temple

PHILADELPHIA (SMU) – No. 2 SMU suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-0 final at the Temple Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Temple's (2-3-0, 2-3-0 AAC) Mike Eijgendaal scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute off a header from teammate Santiago Majewski. Just a few minutes later, SMU (3-1-0, 3-1-0 AAC) would put one past Temple's Eion Gawronski, but the ball was called dead prior to the shot.

The rest of the half saw a flurry of shots from the Mustangs, but none made it in to score. SMU outshot Temple 10-3 in the first 45 minutes and had five shots on goal.

SMU's first chance in the second half came when Knut Ahlander's shot was saved by Temple off a Mustang corner kick. The Mustangs tried to take advantage of subsequent set piece opportunities, but ultimately fell short.

In the 63rd minute, Temple converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead after Thomas Haney was issued a red card in the penalty box, forcing the Mustangs to play a man down.

The Mustang defense worked hard over the next 27 minutes to keep Temple's five shot attempts out of the net. Shane Lanson, who had four saves on the night, thwarted a minute-80 attempt by the Owls, diving to keep the ball out.

Two red cards were issued in the 86th minute, turning the game into a nine versus 10 matchup for the final four minutes. Papa Ndoye and Temple's Brandon Johnson were both given cards.

Gabriel Costa and Papa Ndoye led the Mustang offense with four shots each. Three of Costa's were on goal. Timo Hummrich, Nick Taylor and Brandon Terwege led the way on defense playing the entire 90 minutes.

SMU is back in action on Saturday, March 13 as they take on UCF at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in Dallas at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
