Mustangs Win Fourth Straight With 4-1 Victory Over Memphis

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis won its fourth-consecutive match as the Mustangs defeated Memphis, 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Complex.

"Tremendous effort from our team today," said head coach Jeff Nevolo. "Memphis has played a really tough schedule this season and they're a very talented team. We have talked about embracing adversity the last few matches and I thought we did a good job in the big moments. Jackie getting a win at 1 was huge. Her opponent is a very good player and Jackie has been struggling a bit as of late. She played a complete match and it was great to see her raise her level. I also can't understate how important doubles was. Nicole and Winslow finished the breaker playing "Mustang Doubles" and that was huge. We have a big match under the lights against UT Arlington Thursday. Another great opportunity to improve."

The Mustangs began the day with a victory in doubles that came down to a tight match on court three. After Claudia Bartolome and Chandler Carter cruised to a 6-2 win on court one, the Tigers answered with a win on court one over Jackie Nylander and Hadley Doyle. Doyle and Nylander had comeback from quadruple match point earlier in the set before falling, 7-5. With the match relying on Winslow Huth and Nicole Petchey, the duo pulled out their win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).

In singles, the Mustangs won five of six first sets to maintain their advantage in the match. Hadley Doyle finished up her, 6-2, 6-1 on court one in dominant fashion.

On court one, Nylander battled Abrams of Memphis and came out with a 6-3, 6-3 win against a strong opponent. Carter would clinch the Mustangs fourth-straight win with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court three. The Tigers were able to break the shutout with a 6-3, 6-4 over Bartolome on court five.

At the time of clinch, Petchey was one game away from a match win, 6-4, 5-2 and Huth was in the midst of a third-set battle, 6-2, 3-6, 1-2.

The Mustangs improve to 8-6 on the season including 8-1 on their home courts. SMU is now 2-0 against American Athletic Conference opponents on the year.

SMU returns to the court on Thursday for a 5 p.m. matchup with UT Arlington.
