Mustangs Knock Off Unbeaten UTA, 4-2

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's tennis extended its win streak to five with a comeback victory over UTA, 4-2, on Thursday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

"The word that keeps coming up in team meetings is adversity," said head coach Jeff Nevolo. "We certainly faced a good amount of it tonight. Proud of our team for battling through and keeping their heads up, especially after losing the doubles point after having multiple match points. Doyle, Nylander, Bartolome, and Petchey all came up with the goods when they needed to. Huth had chances and is making big strides in her game. It was great to see Avery (Hilbig) come in and get a win in her first college dual match. She went for it in the big moments and that's what we've been talking about all year with this team. It's not easy to come in and do what she did tonight. We've got another big conference match Saturday at noon against a good Tulane team. We're excited to keep pushing forward with this group."

Facing a UTA team with a perfect 7-0 record on the season, the Mustangs started in a hole as UTA grabbed the lead with a win in doubles. The Mustangs dominated on court one behind Jackie Nylander and Hadley Doyle. The duo improved to 4-1 together with a 6-2 win. UTA evened doubles with a 6-4 win over Nicole Petchey and Winslow Huth. Claudia Bartolome and Avery Hilbig had an opportunity to finish it off on court two but the Mavs rallied back from several match points. UTA would go on to win the set, 7-5.

SMU answered UTA by winning four of six first sets in singles to take a slight edge in the match. Doyle's speedy 6-0, 6-2 win on court two brought the two sides even at 1-1.

Avery Hilbig came through for the Mustangs in her first collegiate dual match. Hilbig took down court six, 6-3, 6-4 to send the Mustangs in front. Bartolome won a streaky first set, 6-4 before taking care of set two, 6-2.

With SMU up 3-1, UTA slowly began to draw closer to the Mustangs. Huth fell to Polina Akimova on court three, 6-2, 6-4.

Nylander dominated set one, 6-1, but found herself heading to a third on court one after a 4-6 score in the second. On court five, Petchey dropped set one but fought back to force a third. With two third sets in progress, the Mustangs needed to win one to secure the victory over the Mavs. Jackie looked to provide the clinching point jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The sophomore finished off the match with a 6-3 top-line victory. Petchey was leading 4-1 when the match ended.

The Mustangs move to 9-6 on the season including 9-1 at home. UTA drops its first match of the season to fall to 7-1. The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday as they face fellow American Athletic Conference program Tulane at noon.
