Hardigree, Smithson Qualify For NCAA Championships On 1 Meter

LEXINGTON, Ky. (SMU) – Parker Hardigree and Peter Smithson closed out the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships just as they opened them, with automatic NCAA qualifying performances.

On the final day of action, Hardigree and Smithson qualified on 1 meter as part of the top nine.

Hardigree added to his 3 meter bid with a career best, seventh place performance on 1 meter with a combined score of 632.90. The junior is a two-time conference champion in the event, most recently winning in 2021.

This will be the first trip to the NCAA Championships for Hardigree.

Smithson becomes the first diver to qualify for multiple NCAA Championships since Bryce Klein (2016 & 2018), and the first to earn back-to-back bids since Devin Burnett (2012-13).

The sophomore earned automatic bids on all three events at the Zone Championships, which gives him back-to-back Championship berths on 3 meter and platform.

Smithson finished ninth on 1 meter, registering a 624.05. He was 12th after prelims and used a 319.85 on his second six dives to climb into an automatic qualifying spot. It was five spots better than his 2020 finish.

Dominic Hoefer (573.40) also competed in the event final, posting a personal best finish of 17th.

Hardigree and Smithson will join swimmer Caleb Rhodenbaugh at the NCAA Championships, who was selected to compete in the 200-yard breaststroke with the option to enter the 100-yard breaststroke as well.

The Championships are set for March 24-27 in Greensboro, N.C.
