Mustangs Fall In 4-3 Match To No. 34 USF

TAMPA (SMU) – SMU men's tennis lost 4-3 to No. 34 South Florida on the road on Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in a match that came down to a third set on court one. The Mustangs won doubles including a ranked win on line two along with two singles wins from Clarke Wilson and Jordi Redelijk in the match.

"So proud of this team. We were inches away in an ultra-physical match lasting 3 hours and 45 minutes in 90' heat and 90% humidity," said head coach Grant Chen. "Our boys competed. Six different Mustangs posted wins today and we just needed one more set. Our American Athletic Conference is so strong and it's going to be a test each match. Jordi and Clarke played near flawless tennis and doubles has been really firing. We are making the strides and improving with each match."

The Mustangs faced two ranked doubles tandems to begin the match, #21 Rithvik Bollipalli/Jakub Wojcik on court one and #38 Chase Ferguson/Pierre Luquet on court two. The Bulls defeated the Mustang combo of Tomas Vaise and Juan Jose Bianchi , 6-3 on line one. But the Mustangs rallied with Huntley Allen and Julian Steinhausen prevailing, 6-4 on court three. Facing No. 38, Caleb Chakravarthi and Liam Krall pulled through a 6-4 victory to send the Mustangs in front.

Singles began with the Mustangs maintaining a slight edge, winning three of the six first sets. Jordi Redelijk, Chakravarthi and Clarke Wilson were all first-set winners for the Mustangs.

Redelijk breezed through his second set as well ending a 6-1, 6-2 winner on court six putting SMU up 2-0. The Bulls didn't wait long to level the score. Steinhausen lost 6-1, 6-3 on court four followed by Tomas Vaise dropping a 6-3, 6-3 match on court three.

Wilson worked his second set to a tiebreaker and closed out the, 6-4, 7-5 win in the breaker. The win gave the Graduate senior six straight victories and a perfect 7-0 record at lines one through five.

With the Mustangs withing one point of clinch, Krall lost his close match 7-6, 6-4 on court two.

At 3-3 in the dual match, Chase Ferguson pushed Chakravarthi to a third set on the last court standing. With all eyes on line one, Ferguson and Chakravarthi traded serves early. At 3-3, the senior captain broke Ferguson to take a 4-3 lead but was immediately broken back on a 40-40 point. After USF held serve, Ferguson broke again to win the court and the dual match for the Bulls.

The Mustangs fall to 12-8 on the season while USF improves to 10-2.

The Mustangs continue the road swing of the schedule on Saturday as they head to Fort Worth for the annual rivalry match with No. 6 TCU.
