Skage Simonsen Earns Hat Trick In 3-2 Win Over USF

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 16 SMU defeated RV USF, 3-2, at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Saturday night as Skage Simonsen led the way scoring all three goals.

The Mustangs (4-2-0, 4-2-0 AAC) took down the Bulls (4-3-0, 4-3-0 AAC) for the second time this season after also winning in Tampa, 7-0, in February.

Skage Simonsen scored his first goal of the night in the 15th minute off a helper from Timo Hummrich. Simonsen's shot found the lower left hand corner of the goal for an early Mustang lead.

USF's Brian Schaefer and Salvatore Mazzaferro both scored in the last 20 minutes of the first half to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

Simonsen answered after halftime with his second and third goal coming within the first two minutes back on the field. Just 48 seconds into the second half, Noah Hilt passed the ball into Harvey Castro, who chested it down, allowing Simonsen to rocket the ball past USF's keeper.

The game-winner was in the 47th minute when Simonsen scored again on the left-hand side of the goal off a cross from Gabriel Costa.

Simonsen's hat trick is the first time a Mustang has scored three or more goals since Garrett McLaughlin scored five in October of 2019 at Cincinnati.

Cole Johnson earned his first career win with three saves in the second half, including a diving deflection in the last minute as the Bulls tried to send the game into overtime.

The Mustang offense was on fire as they outshot USF, 15-10. Skage Simonsen led the pack with four shots, Timo Hummrich had three, Costa and Tobin Shanks each had two and Knut Ahlander, Nick Taylor, Harvey Castro and Wyatt Priest had one apiece.

SMU is back in action next Saturday, March 27 at Tulsa. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
