Mustangs Defeat No. 37 Rice, 4-2

HOUSTON (SMU) - SMU women's tennis defeated No. 37 Rice, 4-2, in Houston for the Mustangs' third ranked win in the last four matches.

"Today was another great college tennis match," said head coach Jeff Nevolo. "This group has grown so much this season and continues to put the work in. It's awesome to see it paying off deep in third sets against tough competition. We talked about going out and taking the match and we were able to do that when it mattered today on a number of courts. Big conference match tomorrow against Houston. We will be ready."

The Mustangs outlasted the Owls for their 18th win of the season, the most for the program in the last 10 seasons. In the three-hour plus match victory, the Mustangs handed the Owls their first home loss of the season.

SMU started it off with a comeback victory in doubles. Hadley Doyle & Jackie Nylander dropped their match on line against Budin & El Jardi, 6-3. Winslow Huth & Nicole Petchey evened it up with their 6-4 win on court three followed by Claudia Bartolome & Chandler Carter closing out the win, 7-5, on line two.

In singles, SMU held on to the narrow edge by splitting the six first sets with the Owls.

Doyle earned her fourth ranked win of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 win on line two over No. 67 Linda Huang, putting SMU up 2-0. Rice got the point right back with a win on line four over Carter, 6-3, 6-4. Petchey took care of business with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court six, putting the Mustangs within one point of clinch, 3-1.

The three remaining courts all needed a third set to decide a winner. After winning, 6-0 in the first set, Huth lost set two and three by a score of 6-3 to give Rice point No. 2 in the match.

Nylander played a pair of tiebreakers in each of the first two sets. She lost set one's breaker, 7-4, but extended her match with a 7-3 win in set two.

For the second time in three matches, Claudia Bartolome provided the clinching point in a ranked win for the Mustangs. After a 6-2 first-set loss, Bartolome answered with a 6-3 win in the second. She earned a break in the third and served for the match up 5-4. Facing 40-40, Bartolome sealed the victory by pulling out the critical deciding point.

The 48th-ranked Mustangs improve to 18-9 on the season with wins in 14 of their 17 matches. Rice moves to 12-5 overall after its first home loss of the season (10-1).

The Mustangs look to improve upon their 6-1 record in conference on Sunday as they take on Houston. The road match is slated for 1 p.m.
