Mustangs Knock Off No. 33 Tulsa, 4-3

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's tennis knocked off No. 33 Tulsa in another down-to-the wire match decided by a third-set tiebreaker on the final court. The victory gave the Mustangs their third ranked win of the season.

Graduate transfer Clarke Wilson was entrusted with closing out the Mustang win in a 3-3 match. Wilson let a few match points slip away before facing a 6-5 score in the third-set breaker. Wilson delivered for the Mustang faithful, pushing the SMU over the top against the Golden Hurricane.

The fantastic match between Tulsa and SMU had started 3 hours and 30 minutes before Wilson's capper, with the Mustangs jumping out to a lead in doubles. Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Julian Steinhausen took court two, 6-1 and Huntley Allen and Wilson won 6-3 on court three.

In singles, the Mustangs split the first sets with Tulsa, winning on lines one, three and five. Liam Krall's victory came in the only match that didn't go three sets. Krall won, 6-2, 6-3.

Each of the Mustangs that dropped their first sets answered with a set two victory. Tulsa's Gale earned the first point for the Golden Hurricane after defeating Julian Steinhausen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Vaise won his first set against Kody Pearson, a nationally-ranked singles player, but lost the final two sets for TU's second point.

Caleb Chakravarthi outlasted Di Marco on line two with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win that moved the Mustangs to within one. Vrbsky forced a tiebreaker to decide the match on line four but Tulsa prevailed, 7-5. Wilson was the only court left with score knotted at three. He was up 5-1, but found himself in a breaker. The Ontario native capped off the weekend with his tiebreaker victory.

The Mustangs move to 15-13 on the season including 12-4 at home. SMU returns to the court on Thursday as they meet up with UT Dallas for senior day. The Mustangs take on UTA later in the day in Arlington.
