Women's Golf Earns Runner-Up at Lone Star Invitational

HUMBLE, Texas – SMU's women's golf team had its best finish of the 2021 season, using seven birdies in the final three holes to finish second at the Lone Star Invitational. At -5, the Mustangs had their best 54-hole score since 2015-16 and the third-best tournament score in school history.

The Mustangs, who trailed only No. 14 Baylor entering the final round, fired a season-best -3 Tuesday to fight off a late charge for second by Texas State. This is only the second time in school history SMU has been par-or-better in all three rounds of a 54-hole tournament.

As proceedings were winding down, Texas State drew even with SMU to tie for second. With three holes to play, the Mustangs' grouping of Kennedy Pedigo, Serena Shah and Lauren Chappell all birdied the 362-yard par 4 6th, each sending their approach to within eight feet of the hole. The Mustangs increased their lead for second to the final margin of five shots when Nicole Vivier and Sophie DiGesualdo each birdied their final hole.

"It was another good day of golf today; it's always nice to have a good tournament headed into the conference championship," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "It was nice to see our seniors play well and to see that we finished both the tournament and each round strong."

"We've gotten better as the year has progressed, and we're playing some of our best golf right now," Sutherland added.

Baylor, who was ranked No. 1 nationally for a good portion of the spring, won the event with a score of -38. Houston's Maria Jose Martinez won medalist honors at -14.

Pedigo finished ninth in the tournament at -3, her second top-10 of the season, after a final-round 70 at the Golf Club of Houston. After bogeys on her ninth and 10th holes of the day, Pedigo caught fire, hitting the next eight greens and sinking five of the eight ensuing birdie putts. She shot par-or-better each round of the tournament, and had a team-high 12 birdies. This was the second time this season Pedigo has finished 54 holes at even-or-better.

Shah tied for 11th at even par, signing for an even-par 72 at the 6,247-yard Rees Jones-designed track. Shah started the day +3 through 3 holes, but went bogey-free in her next 15 to return to even par for the round and championship. On the 517-yard par 5 4th, she rattled the flagstick with her third shot, leaving her an easy four-footer for birdie, one of three birdies on the day.

DiGesualdo shot a career-best 70, matching Pedigo for the low SMU round of the day. She had five birdies on the day, none more impressive than at the 391-yard par-4 17th, where she holed out from a greenside bunker. She tied for 13th at +1, her best finish of the season and her third collegiate top-15.

Vivier birdied three out of her last five holes to close with a 1-over 73, finishing the event in solo-19th at +5. It is the freshman's second top-20 finish in six career events.

Chappell tied for 20th at +5, her best result of the season. Her only birdie of the day came at the sixth, when she and her playing partners surrounded the hole with their approaches.

Megan Daleo had a hot start to the round, birdieing two of her first three, on the way to a 1-over 73. Her ball-striking was excellent on Tuesday, and saw no greater display than on the short par-4 12th, where her pitch mark damaged the lip of the hole, before spinning away to 10 feet.

The Mustangs next head to the American Athletic Conference Championship, which takes April 18-20 at the famed Pinehurst Resort's No. 6 Course.
