SMU Advances To Program's First National Championship Team Final

WACO, Texas (SMU) – No. 4 SMU advances to the first NCEA National Championship team final in program history after defeating No. 8 Baylor, 8-6, at the Extraco Events Center on Friday.

"We're super excited to get out alive today and move on and advance to the finals," head coach Carol Gwin said. "It's really been an emotional roller coaster ride all weekend. I'm really proud of coach Henter, coach Lantz, all the people that have made this a huge collective effort, as well as the student-athletes."

The Mustangs (10-1) earned two points in Fences over the Bears (3-8) to start the day with a 2-1 win. Devin Seek earned the highest score of the event between the two teams with a 264 for the first Mustang point. Alex Pielet scored a 256 to win the second point and Olivia Woodson tied with her Baylor opponent with a score of 251.

Over in the Coliseum, the Horsemanship squad finished 3-1 to top the Bears. Mallory Vroegh won the initial point, scoring a 220 to outscore her opponent by 26. The second point came from Nya Kearns, who scored a 230.5 to win her 10th Mustang point of the season and remain undefeated. Aubrey Alderman wrapped up the scoring with an event-high 231.5.

SMU led Baylor, 5-2, at the halfway point with Reining and Flat action left to go.

The Bears earned a 2-1 win in Reining after Dani Latimer and her Baylor opponent tied with scores of 207. Aubrey Alderman won her second SMU point of the day and the lone point for the Mustangs with a 207.5. SMU carried a slim 6-4 lead into Flat.

Olivia Woodson won the first Flat point of the matchup, scoring a 228 over her opponent's 220. Baylor won the next two points, which brought the Bears within one. Taylor Madden closed out the day with a 26-point win, scoring a 245 for the highest Flat total of the semifinal round and securing the win for SMU.

SMU will face No. 3 Georgia, who defeated No. 2 Oklahoma State in its semifinal matchup with a 10-6 score. The two will meet on Championship Saturday at the Extraco Events Center starting at approximately 10:30 a.m. CT.

The Mustangs competed in the Reining event final in 2019, but this Saturday will be the first appearance for SMU in the team final. It also will mark the first time a team from outside the SEC or Big 12 will compete for the title.

What a fantastic season!

Such incredible progress in the program to be able to legitimately compete with schools like Georgia.
