Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At AAC Championship

PINEHURST, N.C. – SMU finished fifth at the American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship Tuesday, closing with the team's best round of the tournament. Mustangs' Kennedy Pedigo and Serena Shah tied for ninth in the individual standings.

The Mustangs went +5 at Pinehurst No. 6 in the third round, which was the second-best round of the day among the 10-team field. SMU moved past USF for fifth place, and fell one stroke behind UCF for fourth. Tulsa won the tournament at +24, and the American Athletic Conference's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. It is SMU's fourth top-5 finish at the AAC Championship in the seven times the event has been held.

Pedigo and Shah posted SMU's first top-10 finishes at this event since the 2017 edition, as they handed in matching 74s in the third round. Pedigo has finished in the top-10 in three of her last five events, as she used two birdies Tuesday in her final round to finish the tournament at +7. Shah's t-9th finish is her season-best as she joined the tie at +7. Dorthea Forbrigd of East Carolina won individual medalist honors, and an automatic invite into NCAA Regionals as an individual, with a total of -1.

Pedigo now holds the fifth-best career scoring average at SMU at 75.32, and the ninth-best single-season mark at 74.25. Despite only playing a spring schedule, her nine par-or-better rounds this season tie for the 10th-most in school history.

Sophie DiGesualdo had her best round of the tournament, writing an even-par 72 on her scorecard. She had three birdies on the back-nine at the No. 6 course, including one on No. 17, where an excellent drive left her an up-and-down from 100 yards out. She tied for 19th at +12.

Lauren Chappell finished in the top-15 at the American Athletic Conference Championship for the second straight time it was held, posted a final-round 73. Chappell, who tied for 12th at the 2019 version of the event, was the team's co-leader in birdies with seven on the way to finishing T-13th. Chappell was -1 on the front side of the No. 6 course, and nearly had the shot of the day when her chip on No. 17 hit the hole and bounced out.

Nicole Vivier had a strong start, going even-par on the front side of the 6,290-yard Fazio-designed layout, before finishing with a 78. Vivier concluded her first AAC Championship tied for 42nd at +23.
