Rowing Wins AAC Championship

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — SMU rowing won its first conference championship in program history at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday. The Mustangs had a clean sweep, winning all four races at Melton Lake. With the championship crown, SMU earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships held in Sarasota, Florida May 28-30.

The Mustangs began the day winning a photo-finish race over UCF in the Second Varsity Four boat. SMU edged the Knights by two tenths of a second finishing at the 7:38.019 mark. This race was not counted towards the final results.

In the First Varsity Four race, SMU finished strong to take the first 24 points of the AAC Championship competition ahead of UCF and Sacramento State.

The Second Varsity Eight boat took the water with the lead and beat out UCF by five seconds with a time of 6:37.136 to take a 72-60 advantage over UCF heading into the final and determining race.

In the last competition, the First Varsity Eight followed suit and took down the defending conference champion UCF Knights by three seconds, finishing at the 6:35.916 mark.
