Mustangs Win Four Medals And Break Three SMU Records On AAC Final Day

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) – SMU Track & Field won four medals and broke three program records on the final day of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.

In the final SMU event of the meet, the Mustang 4x400 team of Ashton Woods, Whitney Williams, Annette Bolomboy and Chika Iwuamadi placed third with a program record time of 3:37.15. The team bested the record set back in 2019 by a Mustangs relay squad that also contained Woods and Iwuamadi along with Madison Pyle and Chelsea Francis. Iwuamadi ran the final lap for SMU on Sunday and made the critical pass of fourth place UCF that insured the Mustangs a spot on the medal stand.

Chika Iwuamadi added to her resume with a silver medal in the 400m final. With a time of 52.96, Iwuamadi took home her second career 400m outdoor silver. She improved on her season's best time and currently sits at top-25 in NCAA West prelim qualification.

Ashton Woods captured silver in the 400 hurdles with another record-breaking time. The senior posted 57.85 beating her previous best of 58.31. It was Woods fifth AAC medal and first in an individual event. Woods has shaved nearly two seconds off the SMU record during multiple breakings this season.

Jernaya Sharp broke the 33-year old SMU record in the 100 hurdles during a bronze-medal winning performance on Sunday. Sharp added six points toward the Mustang total with her third-place finish. Her time of 13.18 edged out fourth place by .004 seconds for the final spot on the medal stand. Sharp's new record broke LaVerne Hypolite's previous SMU mark of 13.30 set back in 1988.

Chelsea Francis finished in sixth in the final of the 100m. Francis improved on her season's best time with a 11.47 performance. She moves into a potential NCAA Qualifying position with the new time. Francis finishes her AAC Outdoor career with 66 points contributed, by far, the most of any Mustang.

After a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon and a fifth-place showing in the javelin, Olivia Dobson scored team points in a third event, the high jump. Dobson cleared 1.67m to finish in seventh and pick up two points. Cassie Ackemann finished in a tie for eighth and Olivia Witt came in 16th.

Atipa Mabonga just missed out on the triple jump finals after posting a top jump of 12.32m. With her top mark on the season of 13.02m, Mabonga sits 25th in NCAA West Prelims qualifying.

The 5000m featured four Mustangs competing in their first AAC Outdoor Championships. Leoni Mierswa led the way with a time of 17:42.18 finishing second in her heat and 16th overall. Mia Olsen clocked a 18:11.24, Maddie Hulcy ran a time of 18:32.33 and Jessie Crowley finished with a 19:10.51 time.

As a team, the Mustangs finished in ninth with 48.33 points. Houston won the meet by a 47-point margin over Cincinnati.

Next up, the Mustangs await announcement on qualifiers for the NCAA West Prelims scheduled for College Station, Texas on May 27-29. Top 48 in individual events earn bids to the prelims along with top 24 marks in relay events and the heptathlon.
