Sharp, Woods, Plus SMU's 4x400 Team Qualify For NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) - Jernaya Sharp, Ashton Woods plus the Mustang 4x400 squad qualified for the NCAA Championships on the final day of the NCAA West Regionals at Cushing Stadium.

The SMU 4x400 squad of Woods, Whitney Williams, Annette Bolomboy and Chika Iwuamadi became the second relay team in program history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a 10th-place overall finish in the meet. The team ran a time of 3:34.05, breaking the SMU record the team had set two weeks back at the AAC Outdoors. The squad joins the 4x100 team of 2015 as the only Mustang relay teams to earn NCAA spots.

Sharp, competing in the first of three heats in the 100 hurdles, needed a top three finish in her heat or one of the next three fastest times overall to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Her time of 13.22 was good for third-place earning the senior her first trip to the Championships.

Ashton Woods earned a spot at the NCAA Championships in the 400 hurdles. Woods extended her stellar senior season with a time of 57.92. She finished fifth in the first heat and had to wait to see if her time held up after the final two heats. She finished with the second-best non-auto qualifier time to secure her a spot alongside Sharp in Eugene on June 9-12.

Woods and Sharp are the first Mustang hurdlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships in either Indoor or Outdoor.

Chika Iwuamadi broke her program record for the second time during the regionals in the 400m with a time of 52.54. Iwuamadi finished in 16th, four spots back of a NCAA Championships position. In the 100m, Chelsea Francis ran an 11.52 in the regional final to finish in 18th.

The SMU 4x100 team of Sharp, Francis, Jordanae Scott and Raelyn Roberson clocked a 45.22 to finish in 17th. The time was a season's best for the Mustangs and improved upon their third best time in program history.

Atipa Mabonga recorded a distance of 12.74m on her final attempt at the triple jump. Mabonga would finish in 23rd of 48 at the West Regional.

The Mustangs finished in the top half of the regional field in six individual events over the week in College Station after sending a 10-year best 11 different Mustangs to the regional.
