Men's Golf Enters NCAA Championship Third Round Tied For 16th

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – The SMU men's golf team is tied for 16th after the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club. The Mustangs must move up at least one position Sunday to make the top-15 cut for the final round of stroke play. SMU is looking for its fourth national top-15 finish since 2014.

The Mustangs shot +14 on Saturday, and are +21 for the tournament. SMU is one stroke behind the cut-line for Monday's final round, and 10 strokes behind the cut-off for match play. Oklahoma State leads the competition at -6, and the Cowboys' Bo Jin leads all individuals at -8.

Justin Thompson led the Mustangs on the day, shooting a season-best 71 at the par 70 Raptor Course. Thompson's day started with sticking his approach from 130 yards out on No. 2 for a birdie, helping him to an even-par 35 on the front nine, the harder half of the golf course this week. He rose 35 places on the leaderboard to a tie for 93rd at +8.

Mac Meissner found a rhythm on the back nine, shooting a bogey-free 2-under 33 coming in, to post a 3-over 73 in the second round. Meissner had a tremendous par save on the 520-yard finishing hole, sending his approach inches above the lip of the fairway bunker to stop just short of the water hazard flanking the green. From there, Meissner chipped to within five feet of the hole to get up-and-down. He is tied for 55th at +5.

Noah Goodwin battled to a 4-over 74, having a mid-round stretch of six holes without a par for the second consecutive day. Goodwin closed his first nine with an even-par 35, birdieing No. 3, No. 9, and the hardest hole on the golf course, No. 7. Goodwin had to battle on the back-nine, but had a nice par-save on No. 12, where he found himself in the rough, short-sided and the green tilting away from him. He flopped the ball onto the fringe, where it rolled out to within three feet of the hole. He joins Meissner in the tie at +5 for 55th.

Ollie Osborne had a 6-over 76, but did birdie the 390-yard 10th. Osborne is tied for 71st at +6. Nathan Petronzio signed for a 8-over 78 on the 7,289-yard track, and is tied for 125th at +12.

The Mustangs return to action at 1:20 p.m. CT on Sunday for the third round of the NCAA Championship.

No, they need to hang on for another day or make up one shot as the top 15 advance to the final round of stroke play. They do need to make up 11 strokes in two days to make the quarterfinals of match play. Our team is more than capable, but we do need Noah, Ollie, and Mac to step it up big time and play average at least. They've been terrible so far.

Not this year. Not a single under par round from any of our guys in 3 days. Ga Tech finishes 15th with only one under par round from their guys but that was enough to beat our guys by one shot
