Cross Country Finishes Second In Aggie Opener; Three Mustangs In The Top 10

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) – SMU Cross Country opened the season with a runner-up finish at the Aggie Opener at the Watts Cross Country Course in College Station on Wednesday evening. Three Mustangs finished in the top 10 of the 4.1k race, with Steffi Jones in second, Kaitlyn Gearin seventh and Cayla Eckenroth in 10th.

The Mustangs finished the race with 49 total points as Leoni Mierswa (14th) and Mia Olsen (16th) rounded out the five counting scores for SMU.

The host, Texas A&M, won the meet with 24 points with Baylor (3rd), ACU (4th), Houston (5th) and TCU (6th) following the Mustangs in the team standings.

SMU had 11 runners in the event with all of them finishing in the top 40 of the 64-person field.

The Mustangs' next race is in DFW at the UTA Season Opener on September 11. The 5k race is at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Cross Country was SMU's first AAC Championship when the league began and I believe the first ever "AAC Champion" crown given.

Correct!

Louisville dominated that first season but the Ponies did well with four conference championships which is incredible since competing for conference championships is our stated goal.
