Mustangs Fall Twice At Rice Invite

HOUSTON, Texas – SMU competed at the Rice Invitational September 3-4. The Mustangs (2-4) dropped the first match 3-0 to Oregon on Friday afternoon, before falling to Rice in four sets on Saturday. Hannah Jacobs led SMU with 22 kills over the weekend.

Oregon 3, SMU 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23)
SMU fell to (T-13) Oregon (5-0) in three sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) on Friday evening. Jacobs paced the Mustangs (2-2) with a game-high 11 kills. Jamison Wheeler grabbed a season-best 11 digs to lead SMU, while Lily Heim dished out 18 assists. Oregon (5-0) hit .276 after being led by Brooke Nuneviller with 10 kills. Georgia Murphy defensively dug up 16 balls. The Ducks took the first two sets and gathered some early momentum. The Mustangs fell behind early in the third, but rallied to put some pressure on Oregon late in the third set.

Rice 3, SMU 1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-12)
The Mustangs put on a fight against (RV) Rice (1-3) on Saturday afternoon. Rachel Woulfe and Jadyn Bauss paced SMU with 15 and 14 kills respectively, while Jacobs added 11. The Mustangs secured 8.5 blocks on the day, as Alex Glover has a team-high five. SMU took the opening set with extra points after taking an early 11-5 lead, and was able to hold off the Owls late run. After falling in the second set, SMU came back with some fire in the third set, but multiple 3-0+ runs from the Owls helped the home team come out on top in the final two sets. Anota Adekunle helped pace the Owls with a game-high 29 kills and hit .417.

Heim dished out 46 assists for SMU, while Bria' Merchant led the Mustangs with 18 digs after getting the start at the libero position.

UP NEXT
SMU will take part in the BlueJay Invitational September 10-11 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Mustangs will face (RV) Creighton, (RV) Illinois, and Nebraska-Omaha.
