SMU Defeats Denver 4-2 On The Road

DENVER (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer team defeated Denver, 4-2, Monday afternoon, handing the Pioneers their first loss of the season (4-1-0). Lindsey Whitmore ended Denver's comeback threat with a goal in the waning seconds of the second half, as SMU improved to 2-1-0.

Whitmore intercepted a pass from the Pioneers deep in the SMU end of the field. The transfer kept it all the way into the Denver box, beating a defender and the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. The goal in the 90th minute was SMU's first of the second half, and answered back-to-back, second-half goals by Denver.

The Pioneers cut the SMU lead to one, 3-2, scoring in the first minute of the second half, and again in the 69th minute. Wayny Balata scored the first goal of the game, getting on the end of a pass from Courtney Sebazco in the sixth minute. Balata, who has two assists this season, took the pass on the right side of the box and buried it in the right side of the net for her first goal of the season.

Jasmine Vilgrain scored the second goal of the game in the 15th minute. Whitmore sent a cross from the right side toward the back post. Vilgrain slid to get a foot on the ball, and that was all that was needed to direct it to the back of the net.

The goal that proved to be the gamewinner was credited as a Denver own goal as the Pioneers attempted to clear a cross from SMU's Brigitta Pulins. Again, it was down the right side of the field where the Mustangs found success on the attack. Denver put the ball in its own net in the 16th minute, and the Mustangs held on for what was a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Goalkeeper Samantha Estrada kept the Mustangs in front with four saves on 21 shots, and got some help from her frame as Denver put three shots off the crossbar.

The Mustangs return home to the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium Thursday to host Oklahoma State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Pretty impressive scoring 4 goals on 3 shots on goal...thanks to the own goal at the end.

Wasn't it 3 shots total? Meaning every shot (plus Denver's mistake) went in?

Now THAT is efficient
