No. 9 SMU Plays To 1-1 Draw Versus Denver

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 9 SMU saw its first overtime contest of the season on Monday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium as their match with Denver ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Mustangs (2-0-1, 0-0-0 AAC) led the Pioneers (1-1-1, 0-0-0 Summit) in shots through the first half 8-5, but it was the visitors that took the first lead.

Denver buried a goal in the 24th minute as Dustin Norman's unassisted shot was deflected off the heel of SMU defender Thomas Haney and soared just over keeper Cole Johnson's head for the 1-0 advantage.

The Pioneers took their lead into the break before both teams came out reenergized in the second half.

The contest saw increased physicality during the second 45 minutes as SMU pushed for the equalizer. After making two close shots, including one on goal, senior Papa Ndoye found the back of the net to knot the match at 1-1.

In the 77th minute, senior Knut Ahlander slid a pass to his classmate Skage Simonsen, who back-heeled the ball to Ndoye. Ndoye then took the shot off his left foot, which went between a Denver defender's legs and past the keeper.

Ndoye came close to breaking the tie as he launched a bicycle kick that bounced off the crossbar in the 84th minute. Despite totaling 11 shots during the second half, the Mustangs couldn't find a game-winner and the contest went into overtime.

The two teams played through two 10-minute overtime periods which saw a close goal from senior midfielder Gabriel Costa in the 105th that went just wide. Neither side could claim the golden goal as the match ended with a final score of 1-1.

Sophomore Cole Johnson earned his third straight win in goal as he made two saves, helping the Mustangs hold the Pioneers to one.

SMU continues its home stint on Friday, Sept. 10 against No. 16 Saint Louis. The match at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium is set for a 7 p.m. start and action will be shown on ESPN+.
