Mustangs Defeat [RV] Oklahoma State At Home Thursday Night

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer defense was the star of the match in a 1-0 win against [RV] Oklahoma State at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium Thursday night.

Despite facing 19 shots, goalkeeper Tatum Sutherland recorded 10 saves to keep the clean sheet.

"I thought she was amazing," defender Payton Doiron said of Sutherland. "She really saved us on a couple (of plays), and she did a great job of stepping up when we needed her!"

Not only did Doiron play all 90 minutes on the back line, but the sophomore was also the hero offensively. SMU earned a corner in the 50th minute. Courtney Sebazco served a cross into the middle of the box, and Doiron found open space for a header. She sent a high lob into the top left corner that was unstoppable.

After the game, Doiron was asked what she enjoyed more, scoring a goal or getting a shutout. Without hesitation, she said, "Shutout! Defense wins championships!"

Sutherland became the first SMU goalkeeper with at least 10 saves in a match since 2015. Shannon Moroney was the last Mustang to reach double digits with 11 at Connecticut on Oct. 25, 2015.

Elisabeth Tse, Abby Hampton and Abby Dermott joined Doiron at the back, with Tse and Hampton also playing 90 minutes. Despite putting 10 shots on frame, the defensive quartet kept the Oklahoma State attack off balance and limited open looks.

"(Oklahoma State) has a lot of different players that come from different parts of the field. Our biggest thing was to make sure that if they were going to shoot, to make sure they were shooting from further out," head coach Chris Petrucelli explained. "They took a number of shots from outside the area, and we felt that Tatum (Sutherland) could handle that."

With the win, SMU improved to 3-1-0 and 2-0-0 at home. The Cowgirls dropped to 3-3-0. SMU plays its next match at Rice Sunday at 7 p.m. in Houston.
