No. 8 SMU Plays To A 1-1 Draw With No. 23 Saint Louis

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 8 SMU played to a 1-1 draw against No. 23 Saint Louis on Friday night at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium. Goalkeeper Cole Johnson's fifth save of the night came in the 108th minute to preserve the tie.

Gabriel Costa started the scoring, getting SMU on the board in the eighth minute. Costa converted a penalty kick after Papa Ndoye was taken down in the box. It was the fifth score of the season for Costa through just four games.

SLU (3-0-2, 0-0-0 A-10) evened the contest when Mujeeb Murana scored in the 37th minute.

Neither SMU (2-0-2, 0-0-0 AAC) nor the Billikens had many chances in overtime with just three shots combined after regulation. The best opportunity was Johnson's save off the header by Simon Becher in the 108th minute. Johnson also managed to stop a Murana shot to the upper right corner in the 29th minute.

Skage Simonsen and Costa both had opportunities in the 77th minute that were turned back by the SLU defense. Costa followed with another on frame in the 83rd that forced Patrick Shulte to make the toughest of his three saves for the Billikens.

Saint Louis had tallied 11 goals in its first four games, with multiple scores in each previous outing.

This was the second ranked team for the Mustangs in four contests, all at home. SMU knocked off then-No. 8 Stanford 3-1 in the season opener at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium. The Mustangs played overtime for the second time this week after a 1-1 draw with Denver, who is receiving votes, on Monday.

The Mustangs finish out their five-game homestand on Monday, Sept. 13 as they host UIW at 7 p.m., with action being shown on ESPN+.
