No. 18 Mustangs Secure First Conference Win Over Owls, 4-1

DALLAS (SMU) – No. 18 SMU earned its first American Athletic Conference win of the season in its conference opener over Temple by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night at the Temple Sports Complex.

The Mustangs (4-0-2, 1-0-0 AAC) out-shot the Owls (1-2-2, 0-1-0 AAC) by a total of 15-8 and tallied 10 shots on goal compared to Temple's three.

Papa Ndoye scored the first SMU goal of the night as he connected with a pass from Gabriel Costa during the 21st minute to put the good guys up 1-0.

Harvey Castro tallied the second score in the 26th minute when he chipped the ball over Temple keeper Liam Cummings' head to give SMU a 2-0 lead, which held until the team went into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Temple made it a one-goal game in the 60th minute when Nigel Griffith slipped a score past Cole Johnson thanks to an assist from Mike Eijgandaal.

SMU responded in the 81st minute of play when Jose Ortiz tallied his second goal of the week as a shot off his left foot found the bottom center of the goal for a 3-1 lead.

Ndoye scored his second of the night in the 89th minute when he found a pass from Costa and slipped the ball past the Owl keeper to put the insurance goal into the center of the net, giving SMU a 4-1 advantage.

Johnson finished the contest with two saves as the Mustang backline helped hold the Owls off the Mustangs' half of the pitch for a majority of the contest.

SMU returns to Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Sept. 24 as they face the USF Bulls starting at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
