Mustangs Take Down TCU In Five Sets

FORT WORTH, Texas – SMU volleyball took down TCU in five sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12) on Saturday to win its second fifth set match on the season in as many tries. The Mustangs used a season-high 34 block assists to take down the Horned Frogs, marking the highest total since 2011. SMU also put together the most kills (62), total attacks (169), assists (55), and total blocks (18) on the season. Jadyn Bauss was a key contributor as she put together her first double-double on the season with 12 kills and 14 digs.

The Mustangs and the Horned Frogs were tied at 16 and SMU gathered consecutive points to finally take some control of the first set. SMU was able to expand its lead to 23-18 later on. SMU outhit TCU .353 to .097 and gathered eight block assists to take the opening set.

Similar to the first set, both teams went back-and-forth. TCU went up 12-8, but the Mustangs came back to tie it up at 14 and again at 17. The Horned Frogs began forcing a few errors to allow SMU back in it. With the set tied at 22, SMU got a kill from Zairyn Hemsley to put SMU back out in front. Julia Adams then found the floor twice to help TCU tie the match up.

The Mustangs had a lead of 13-9 and later at 22-17. SMU limited the Horned Frogs to a .024 hitting percentage after six more block assists to take a 2-1 lead. After falling in the fourth, SMU was ready for the fifth set after forcing a five-set match against Omaha two matches before.

Glover got the Mustangs going midway through the fifth. She put down a kill to give the Mustangs a 7-4 advantage. TCU came back to knot it up at seven and later at 10. Rachel Woulfe and Glover hit consecutive kills to allow SMU to find match point. The match eventually ended at the net with a block from Glover and Bauss to give SMU the DFW Metroplex victory.

Glover notched a personal-best 12 block assists along with nine kills (.381 hitting pct.) while Hannah Jacobs had a career-high eight total blocks. Jamison Wheeler secured a season-high 10 kills to help the SMU offense. Makayla Miller was a big part of the defense notching 24 digs in the libero position. Woulfe added 15 kills and hit .353 on 34 attacks. Kaylyn Winkler also hit the ball well with 10 kills and finished with a .625 hitting percentage.
