DALLAS (SMU) – No. 13 SMU remains unbeaten on the season, shutting out USF 2-0 in their second American Athletic Conference match on Friday night at Washburne Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Mustangs (5-0-2, 2-0-0 AAC) tallied one goal in the early minutes of each half to claim the win. The good guys were outshot by the Bulls (2-4-1, 0-2-0 AAC) by a slim 12-10 margin, but held the advantage in shots on goal 4-3.

SMU's Lane Warrington found the net in the fourth minute, scoring after Thomas Haney headed along a corner by Knut Ahlander. It was Warrington's first goal of the season and the first assist for Haney. Ahlander added his third assist of the season on the play.

Jose Ortiz doubled the Mustang lead in the 47th minute, finishing on the near post after being led past the defense by Skage Simonsen. Ortiz now has three goals on the 2021 campaign and Simonsen has tallied two helpers.

USF was unable to get past SMU goalkeeper Cole Johnson, who earned his second shutout of the season. Johnson, who has allowed just a single goal in his last 323 minutes in net, lowered his goals allowed average to 0.67.

SMU returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at No. 8 Tulsa, with coverage on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will be back at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 3 as they face Temple starting at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
