No. 14 SMU Plays To A 1-1, 2OT Draw Against UCF

DALLAS (SMU) — The No. 14 SMU women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 1-1, double-overtime draw against UCF Thursday night at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium.

"I thought we played pretty well. In fact, it might be the best game we've played all year," head coach Chris Petrucelli stated after the match. "We're not disappointed with the result, or the way we played. We played a good team. It was a quality game and both teams played well. I was really happy with the way we played."

After a scoreless 45 minutes of action that featured just eight shots between the two sides, Elisabeth Tse put the Mustangs (7-1-1, 1-0-1 American Athletic Conference) in front with a goal in the 53rd minute. The freshman collected an attempted clearance from the head of a UCF defender 15 yards in front of the goal. She took two touches to settle the ball before calmly placing it in the bottom right corner.

The Mustangs got to within 10 minutes of a sixth straight shutout, but the Knights (5-4-1, 0-2-1 The American) were able to force overtime with an 81st-minute equalizer. Ellie Moreno won the ball in the box on a pass from Anna Henderson. The open shot from 12 yards out left little chance for Tatum Sutherland to make the save. It was the first goal Sutherland has given up all season.

SMU outshot UCF 23-9 overall, including 12 on goal, but Caroline DeLisle made 11 saves to keep the Knights in the match. Perhaps her best and most difficult save came on a would-be game winner off the foot of Lindsey Whitmore in the 106th minute. Whitmore's second shot of the match forced a high diving effort to the goalkeeper's left that DeLisle caught at full stretch.

Courtney Sebazco forced the UCF goalkeeper to make one final save in the 108th minute before the match ended. Wayny Balata took eight shots for the Mustangs, forcing five of DeLisle's saves.

Sutherland was not to be outshined. Despite only facing three shots on goal, she came up huge in the 32nd minute. UCF's Madison Murnin took a pass in stride and unmarked nine yards from the left post. At the edge of the six-yard box, she unleashed a low, driving shot destined to sneak inside the post, but Sutherland was able to save it with her right foot, directing the shot wide.

The Mustangs next match is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7, at home against Houston at 7 p.m.
